Hyperhydrosis: Excess Sweating

Excess sweating medically termed as hyperhydrosis is defined by the body parts sweating more than what is required to maintain homeostasis or the normal metabolic condition in the body. Typical cases of excess sweating exhibit sweat on facial area, cranial area, palms, armpits and soles in an errant manner. This condition is socially embarrassing to the sufferer. About 2-3% of the world’s population suffers with hyperhydrosis. However, no connection has been found between suffering from hyperhydrosis and being nervous, anxious or active. This elaborates that the disease is governed by the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system which is involuntary in nature.

Most often than not it is an inherited condition and affects the sufferers on a social and emotional level. However several ways exist to combat the disease. Initially, one should make sure that excess sweating is not caused by any other condition like obesity, a metabolic disorder or menopause. One also needs to determine whether sweating is all over the skin surface or just in one area like the soles of feet, underarms, face or the palms of hands. Different herbal medications, lotions, oral medicines and injections are being used to treat the disease effectively depending on the degree of severity. Doctors generally start off with giving strong antiperspirant solutions to be applied on palms or the armpits which are effective but also cause certain amount of irritation. Botox injections have been used in the past to treat hyperhydrosis. A peculiar treatment involves use of torch battery electricity to literally switch off the sweat glands.

Maxim is only for use on the armpits.
